'90s babes will be excited to know that overalls are definitively on the Y2K fashion revival list. The onesie pants style we wore during our childhood is back in a big way, maximizing comfort and convenience in updated ways that we're all about this fall and winter season. Give us a one-and-done fashion ensemble, and we're happy as clams. Before getting to the list of the best overalls to add to your wardrobe, let’s consider why a stylist says they deserve a hanger in your closet—now and always.
“Overalls are a timeless piece and they’re very versatile. You can wear them in all seasons and you can wear them during the day or at night,” says Jenny Rodriguez, a stylist of eight years. Rodriguez has worked with TV stars like Nick and Vanessa Lachey, Julissa Bermúdez, and Giuliana Rancic. She also cooked up looks as an assistant stylist for Beyoncé’s Ivy Park campaign with Adidas. But how do you know which ones are actually worth your hard-earned cash? Casual Jumpsuits

“I would say it's all about the fit and how you feel in them,” says Rodriguez. When shopping around for the picks in this list, I found that having my measurements on hand was super helpful when picking a size.
Rodriguez adds: “The adjustable straps are definitely something to look for because you can play around with what look you want to achieve,” she says, adding that you can make the outfit casual, sleek, or chic by tightening or loosening your straps.
From personal experience, I can say it’s also important to consider your height. A lot of the pairs I tested were quite long for my five-foot body, so I opted for a petite choice whenever I could, like with the GAP option.
Best splurge overalls Frame, Black Le High Flare Overall — $400.00 Rodriguez says that if there’s a pair of overalls that are worth the splurge, it’s hands-down Frame’s Black Le High Flare Overall. “They’re my favorite because it’s black denim and they have a little flare at the bottom there. This would be a good pick for date night, but it’s also just a great versatile overall,” says Rodriguez. On Net-a-Porter, the piece is available in sizes extra small through large. Although that’s not a wide range of sizes, this is still a great pick because it’s stylish (thanks to the slight bell shape at the overall’s hem) and still functional, considering that it has two pack pockets, two front pockets, and two additional pockets on the bib of the garment. It also has adjustable straps, which allow you to go for a relaxed or cozy fit depending on your mood. Sizes available: XS-L SHOP NOW

Best classic overalls Levi’s, Vintage Denim Women's Overalls — $138.00 “If you want something more casual, something that you can wear if you’re just chillin’ or even running errands, I would do your classic Levi’s overall,” says Rodriguez. The beauty of a classic is that it’s also quite versatile, which means you can “wear this with sandals, sneakers, or slides,” Rodriguez adds. It allows the latitude for you to be comfortable while still looking like you at least tried to get yourself together. The Levi’s overalls are made of 100 percent cotton, so they’re soft to the touch and offer a lot of comfort whether you’re laying around or are out and about. According to some Revolve reviewers, though, these overalls may not be true to size. Our advice is to check your measurements and refer to the website’s size guide, which you’ll see under the sizing on the product page. Sizes available: XS-XL SHOP NOW

Best day-to-night overalls Lulus, Modern Charm Faux Leather Overalls — $118.00 These overalls from clothing company Lulus are what Rodriguez calls a “transitional piece,” which is to say that you can wear this piece during the day and then keep that same ‘fit for a night out. What Rodriguez loves about these, in particular, is that they’re made of faux leather, which is exactly what makes the day-to-night vibe to which she alludes. This pair features adjustable straps as well as a straight leg cut—as opposed to a skinny cut or a flare, like in the Frame overalls. The faux leather is composed of half polyurethane and half polyester, so the feel of this is spongey rather than starchy. It also has three side buttons for easier closure and a snugger fit. Best cold-weather overalls Free People, Camilla Cord Slim Flare Overall — $158.00 “This one is perfect for fall, now that it’s getting a little chillier, because it’s a cord,” says Rodriguez, referring to the fact that this pair is made of corduroy. “A corduroy overall is also super cute and a great piece that you can incorporate in your wardrobe,” Rodriguez said of this pick. I might just buy this for myself because I love the look that much. As overalls, they have the classic bib design on the chest as well as adjustable straps, but Free People made the design their own by adding a zipper to the bib. The leg fit is slim all the way down your thigh, but there’s also a bit of a flare at the hem. The back of this garment is also a bit different than the rest, as it cuts lower into the back—where there are no back pockets. Sizes available: XS-XL SHOP NOW

Best plus-size overalls Ava & Viv Denim Overalls — $45.00 My roommate is a nanny, so she’s always looking for clothes that are comfortable and functional without sacrificing too much style. (After all, she likes to look good.) On a recent Target run, she got these black denim overalls and says she’s worn them at least once a week ever since. “I love that I have a bunch of pockets for when I pick up random things throughout the day,” she told me. When I asked her to list her pros and cons for this garment, she said: “Pros are that they’re generally comfortable and go with pretty much everything in my closet. As far as cons, if your waist proportions aren’t close to your hip proportions, the fit on the lower back can be a little… unforgiving.” Sizes available: 14W-30W SHOP NOW

Runner up, best plus-size overalls Old Navy Slouchy Straight Non-Stretch Jean Overalls — $60.00 If you’re looking for a baggier option that’s also plus-size, it’d be worth considering this pair of Old Navy overalls. They go up to size 30, and they’re designed to be loose around the belly as well as the lower leg. Speaking of the leg, the pant part only goes down to right above the ankle, so this could be a good option for people who are on the shorter side as well. According to the product page, these overalls are made of 100 percent cotton, five percent of which is recycled. There are also a number of pockets, including three thin ones on the bib area. The unique thing about this pair is that there’s also a patch pocket on the back leg. As a more classic piece, there are also adjustable straps at the shoulders. Sizes available: 00-30 SHOP NOW

Best budget-friendly overalls Cider Corduroy Jumpsuit — $34.00 I have to admit, targeted Instagram ads definitely got me here. I’d seen other Cider pieces every now and again, but it wasn’t until I started working on this list that Cider was officially on my radar. I was looking for overalls that one could dress up and saw this jumpsuit. I thought to myself, “Well, this is a jumpsuit—does it actually count?” According to Rodriguez, it does—because it has straps instead of a shirt-like top. This is also a good option for colder months since it’s made of corduroy, too. Aside from being stylish, as evidenced by the bell bottoms and color options (seven total!), it also checks the functional box being that it has a bib pocket as well as adjustable straps. These aren’t the classic straps, though. Instead of a metal fastener, Cider’s overalls have a button and different slits on the straps to adjust the fit. And, they’re just $34—a total steal. Best slouchy overalls GAP Slouchy Overalls with Washwell — $53.00 Being that one of my favorite pairs of jeans ever are GAP, I had high expectations of this pair of overalls. I’m glad to report that the slouchy overalls did not disappoint. They fully deliver on their promise of being slouchy, which makes them more comfy than chic. Even so, though, I was able to dress them up a bit with a nice white crop top and some New Balance sneakers for my recent four-hour drive to Vegas. I was so comfy in these overalls. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a shorter girl at five feet, so I love that GAP offers a petite option. This was probably the only pair of overalls I’ve ever gotten that I didn’t have to take to get alterations. The pair comes with the leg cuffed, so I was a little worried that they’d be too long for me once I uncuffed them, but they fit like a glove. If you struggle with finding overalls whose length you don’t have to tailor, I’d definitely say these are worth the purchase. Sizes available: XS-L SHOP NOW

Best for lounging The Great Fantastic Swoveralls — $98.00 Made out of 100 percent organic cotton, I knew I was going to feel like I was wearing a cloud when I put on the Swoveralls. They have adjustable straps, pockets on the back, front, and bib, and the bottom is made to resemble a jogger, meaning it’s not a loose fit around the ankle. I actually really like this because it makes it so that the extra fabric pools at the bottom instead of dragging along the floor. Get your regular size, but know that these are going to be on the looser side. Really my only complaint about this is that it’s not cozier on the inside. I’m not sure why, but I was expecting these overalls to have some sort of fleece on the inside since they’re made for lounging. Even though they’re still straight-up cotton to the touch, they’re still extremely comfortable and were easy to stay in all day. Sizes available: Limited (selling out fast) SHOP NOW

Best for outdoor activities Dickies Relaxed Fit Bib Overalls — $60.00 I decided to anoint Dickies Relaxed Fit Bib Overalls as the best for outdoor activities because while they’re not the sleekest, they are extremely functional. I got a large because I wanted a more relaxed fit, but I would actually suggest staying true to size because this pair is loose as is. I love to garden, so this will likely be my go-to outfit for that activity because it has a lot of handy pockets for my misters, shears, and other gardening accessories. Plus, the material is thick, so I don’t think it’ll wear out easily. To be honest, though, I can also see this being a street-chic outfit with some gold hoops and lifestyle sneakers. “There's a lot that you can do with overalls,” says Rodriguez. Luckily for us, she shared her two favorite ways to style the timeless piece.
Let’s say you’re hoping to style something for day-to-day wear—like if you’re running errands. “Black overalls are such a staple because you can wear them during the day or at night,” says Rodriguez. “I would just do black overalls with a white tank top or shirt underneath. And if I'm running around, doing my errands, or working, I’m going with sneakers.” You can, of course, go with the sneaks of your choosing, but Rodriguez usually reaches for her Converse or Air Force sneaks. She’ll finish this look with subtle earrings and a simple necklace.
On the other hand, to dress them up, Rodriguez will pull out a pop of color. “If I'm going out, I just do an all-black overall, a pink top, throw on a heel—either a pump or a strappy sandal—a classic hoop, some red lipstick, a statement bag, and I’m out the door,” she says. No matter the look you’re going for, though, Rodriguez says it’s always best to go with “whatever you feel comfortable in.”
